"Grand Rounds" Endocrine System
Purpose: To learn about diseases that affect the endocrine system
Process: Each group will be assigned one disease that they will have to role play. Groups of doctors will have 5 minutes to ask questions (using the questions list provided) of the patients and take detailed notes about symptoms and family history. Each group of doctors will then go back to their original project group and research the symptoms (using list of websites) and family history information from the patients, and discuss and determine what they think the disease is. Each group will then fill out a claim/evidence reasoning chart for each disease (except their own).
Claim: The diagnosis of the patients are as follows:
Patient 1: Type 1 Diabetes
Patient 2: Type 2 Diabetes
Patient 3: Cushing's Disease
Patient 4: Graves Disease
Patient 5: Hypothyroidism
Patient 6: Acromegaly
Patient 7: Turner Syndrome
Evidence: The symptoms of the diseases that prove the diagnosis are as follows:
Patient 1 Symptoms:
-Pancreas produces little to no insulin
-Loss of appetite
-Mood changes
-Fatigue
-Blurred Vision
-Bed Wetting
-Nausea
-Confusion
Patient 2 Symptoms:
-Blurred Vision
'-Hunger
-Thirst
-No family history
-Symptoms occur regularly
-Certain foods ease pain
Patient 3 Symptoms:
-Weight gain in midsection
-Purple stretch marks
-Bruise easily
-Fatigue
-Round/red face
-Terminal
-Thinning of legs
Patient 4 Symptoms:
-Goitera
-Hand tremors
-Weight loss
-Chest Pain
-Insomnia
-Passed down by generations
Patient 5 Symptoms:
-Muscle spasms
- Low calcium
'-Cramps
-Burning
-Numbness

- Brittle nails
Patient 6:
-Large tongue
- Erectile dysfunction
-Protruding jaw

Patient 7:
-Large fluid collection on back of neck

-small lower jaw
-low set ears
Reasoning: Our reasoning for why these patients had the diseases they had was determined through loads of research. We had to take everything into account, the symptoms, family history, etc... This made researching a little more difficult, since we didn't have a list of potential diseases until the very end of the project. We all had to research the duration, severity, location, timing, medical/surgical history, and post drug use if there was any. The doctors were also given the opportunity to ask questions of their own, so that had to be taken into account as well. It was for these reasons that we were able to diagnose each patient with the correct disease.
