Creative Engineering Design
For our Creative Engineering Project we had to research a huge problem that was going on in our world. The first step of this project we did in class. We listed all the problems we could think of on the whiteboard. There were a ton of problems that we listed and it was from this list that we chose our problem. For this project we had to create a design for a machine that would help solve whatever problem we chose. We would have to make a PowerPoint presentation and explain to the class how we could make a difference using this machine. We would also have to explain how the machine worked and various features the machine had as well.
Facts about Deforestation
The group that I did this project with included Francesca Mancillas, Ethan Rapp, Colin McCloskey, and myself. For our world problem we chose to research deforestation. Deforestation is the cutting down and removal of trees from a forested area. Deforestation can damage the environment by causing the soil around the area to erode. When the soil erodes, the soil's nutrients are exposed to the sun's intense heat. The moisture in the soil evaporates and the nutrients dry up. The bacteria that that help break down organic matter die. When it rains, the water washes down the soil's surface and erosion takes place. The soil can never regain its full potential back.
Deforestation also causes the loss of habitat for animals that live in forested areas. Deforestation can kill off species we haven't even discovered yet and it can also kill off animals on the endangered species list.
When forests are destroyed the atmosphere, water bodies, and the water cycle are affected. Trees absorb and retain water in their roots. A large part of the water that circulates in the ecosystem of rainforests remains inside the trees. Some of this moisture is transpired into the atmosphere. When this process is broken, the atmosphere and water bodies begin to dry out. The watershed potential is compromised and less water runs through the water bodies. Smaller lakes and streams dry up.
Climate change plays a major factor in almost everything. Trees and plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and uses it to make carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that help make the trees and plants strong.
Deforestation is a huge problem. If we don't stop the cutting down of trees then all the forests will be gone in a matter of years. We are killing our planet every time a tree is cut down.

Our Plan
For our design we chose an all terrain vehicle that replants trees that have been cut down. Our machine runs on solar power so it doesn't release any harmful chemicals into the air likes cars and trucks do. Also, humans don't need to be present for the machine to function. The inside of the machine can hold hundreds of saplings at a time. As the machine moves it tills the ground so it's not as compact, making the soil soft and ready for plants.
